Encaustic Works
Working in encaustic—a molten blend of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment—Tessa Hall constructs paintings through repeated cycles of heating, fusing, scraping, carving, and layering. Her approach emphasizes the interplay between opacity and translucency, controlled mark-making and organic accident. The encaustic medium allows her to embed fibers, charcoal drawings, image transfers, or symbolic objects within the wax, creating a multi-dimensional narrative field. Hall’s technical precision and intuitive handling of the medium result in surfaces that are sculptural, richly layered, and unexpectedly delicate.
